  • JOHN PRINE LAST NIGHT IN FLATBUSH- APRIL 13, 2019

John Prine the legendary, one of a kind singer, songwriter who continues to touch an old and new generation with his humble, profoundly insightful lyrics about life, aging, war, love and death and ordinary people whose stories must not be ignored performed last night at the Kings Theatre in Flatbush. At the end of the show he had thousands of the mostly gray headed crowd on its feet clapping and roaring their love to the man who sent it right back to us.

In recent years Prine’s battle with cancer has left him looking old and heavy, with his face distorted looking like he been through a few rounds in the ring in a fight for his life.

Instead. of being beaten and depressed and hiding he cuts an album with 10 new songs including one about heaven and forgiveness to all the people that have done him dirt over the years. He then goes on tour filling and rocking houses with his humble good humored charm and inexplicably boundless energy including a moment when he takes off his jacket puts down his guitar and does something you might call a dance but everyone knows without him having to say anything was a “fuck you cancer I’m not done yet “ exorcism.

Generously nurturing the career of a 33 year old talented sweet kid from Arizona with an amazing voice his opening act was Courtney Marie Andrews. She joined him later for Angel From Montgomery and the raunchy love duet now making the rounds at marriages — In Spite of Ourselves

It was a touching gift from John to the future.

Then he brings his family on stage with a wall size picture of a gas station general store in Paradise Ky. to sing the finale — a tribute to his father and his home town- “Daddy wont you take me back to Muhlenberg County” — written in 1971 for his debut album — joined by Courtney Marie Andrews. It was a show closing image that makes me tear up as I write.

He had a great interview with John Dickerson on CBS in February
